Karabiners should chosen only where there is no possibility of sideways loading during use, e.g. the connector will always be under load.
For this reason we strongly recommend that karabiners are NEVER used as the connection between a fall arrest lanyard and a harness, as the karabiner can move during a fall to a position where the weaker side gate can be loaded.
Always use screwlinks to attach lanyards to harnesses.
Steel karabiners are more durable than aluminum and should be used chosen whenever weight is not an issue.
Aluminum karabiners are used mainly in rope access and tower climbing / rigging because of their lightness. |
